Innovation is the driving force behind the overall progress of the human race.
In ancient times, the el
ements and the need to invent tools that would enhance the chances of survival pressured Man. Those who invented the tools, and those who made use of them, persisted. Those who feared and rejected the innovations stagnated and, eventually, perished.
The industrial revolution in the 19th Century spawned mechanical progress that exceeded anyone’s imagination, and with it emerged new technologies developed to drive the machinery and make it work more efficiently. Innovation once again excelled and, by its instinctual persistence to secure the future of Man, reached yet greater goals that gradually eliminated the need for massive manual labor and eventually led to the Great Depression.
World War II ensued to propel technology onto the next level. It became the focus of how to win the war and ultimately resulted in the innovation of nuclear weapons and rocket-propelled missiles. The Cold War was born. Driven by new technology that enabled either side to covertly keep an eye on each other, the balance of power became a “behind the scenes” war, using escalated technological sophistication to pose the greatest threat possible to the “enemy”. Man finally became his own worst enemy by developing the ultimate tool that could wipe out the entire planet by merely pressing a button.
Fortunately we got smarter. Despite the devastation, we learned from war. One of the most revolutionary technological advances that sprung from World War II was the development of wireless communications devices, in the form of Spread Spectrum Radios, that were hard to intercept and highly resistant to jamming. Once the threat of nuclear war diminished, military communications technologies seeped into the private sector in applications for civil purposes that laid the groundwork for the next great revolution: Wireless data communications technology and bandwidth compression devices that enable us to capture “now” and keep it for as long as we want.
